Sun over the house

When does the sun reach a house, and when does it leave? Pick a spot (one of the sample places, the coordinates or your own location) and a date: you get sunrise, sunset, golden hour and how much daylight there is, plus the same house on the longest and the shortest day of the year.

You can read an address's coordinates on any map (right-click on the spot, or long-press on a phone).

How it works

  • Sunrise and sunset are computed with NOAA's astronomical formulas (Jean Meeus's reduction, «Astronomical Algorithms»): accurate to about a minute at our latitudes.
  • Sunrise and sunset are the moments the upper edge of the sun touches the horizon, allowing for atmospheric refraction (−0.833°), as in almanacs.
  • The calculation assumes a clear horizon: hills, buildings and the Karst ridge behind the city can hide the sun earlier or later.
  • Golden hour here is, by a simple convention, the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. The photographers' definition (sun between −4° and +6° above the horizon) gives similar windows that vary with the season.
  • The solstices are fixed at 21 June and 21 December: the astronomical day shifts by one, but the times change by seconds.
  • If you use your location, the coordinates stay in your browser: no server receives them.
